Childhood
Gary Paulsen did not have an easy childhood. When he was born, his father Oscar left to train to become an army officer. After his father left, Gary and his mother lived in an apartment in Minneapolis. Gary's mother started seeing a man while Gary's father was in the army. After a while Gary's mother sent him to live with his grandmother. As a child he often was sick with colds or fevers. Gary was very shy and not good at sports. He did not have a lot of friends. A liberian gave him a book and a library card and that started his love for reading. Eventually, at the age of 14 he ran away and joined a carnival.
